Choosing the Right Kitty Litter

Selecting the right cat litter is essential for your cat's comfort and your convenience. There are various types of cat litter available, each with its own pros and cons. Here are some popular options to consider:

  • Natural/Biodegradable Litters. Made from materials like corn, wheat, pine, or recycled paper, these litters are eco-friendly and often flushable. Brands like World's Best Cat Litter and Yesterday's News offer biodegradable options. Our favorite is sWheat Scoop which is a flushable cat litter. Note that if you have a septic system, or low flow toilets, it may not be recommended to flush the litter in the toilet - check with the manufacturer of the litter and/or a reputable plumber.
  • Clumping Clay Cat Litter. This type of litter is a top choice for many cat owners. It forms clumps when it comes into contact with moisture, making it easy to scoop out the clumps and keep the rest of the litter box clean. Several well-known brands exist including Scoop Away, Fresh Step, Cat's Pride, Arm & Hammer, and Tidy Cat.
  • Silica Gel Crystals. Silica gel cat litters are excellent at controlling odors and moisture. They absorb liquid quickly and often change color to indicate when they need replacement. Fresh Step Crystals is a reputable brand.
  • Scented vs. Unscented. Some litters come with added fragrances to mask odors, while others are unscented. The choice depends on your cat's sensitivity to scents and your personal preference.
  • Multi-Cat Litters. If you have multiple cats, consider a litter designed specifically for multi-cat households. These litters are formulated to handle higher traffic and odors.
  • Dust-Free Litters. For people with allergies or cats sensitive to dust, look for litters labeled as dust-free or low-dust. Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra is a popular low-dust option.
  • Budget-Friendly Options. If you are on a tight budget, consider store-brand litters, which can be more affordable than name brands without compromising quality.

It is essential to choose a cat litter that aligns with your cat's preferences and any specific needs or allergies they may have. Additionally, be sure to maintain a clean litter box by scooping waste regularly and replacing the litter as needed to keep your cat happy and healthy. It may take some trial and error to find the perfect cat litter for your feline companion, so don't be afraid to experiment until you find the one that works best for both you and your cat.
