Heartworms are the result of your dog being infected by a parasitic worm which typically originates from a mosquito bite. The bite introduces microscopic larvae into the dog's bloodstream. Over several months, these larvae mature into long worms that inhabit the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. As the infection progresses, it can lead to severe damage to these vital organs. It is important to recognize that recently infected dogs may not show any signs at all of infection and that is why it is so important to get your dog tested yearly with their veterinarian.
It is important, as a dog owner, to recognize the signs of infection. If your dog is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it does not mean that your dog has heartworms; however, it is important that you discuss any of these symptoms with your veterinarian as soon as they become apparent. Your veterinarian can test for heartworms and help to isolate the reason for the symptoms.
Again, if your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.
